We stock Rheem-compatible capacitors on our trucks and can typically replace one the same day you call. Installed cost for a Rheem capacitor replacement in New York usually runs between $175 and $365, parts and labor included. Most homeowners find out their capacitor has failed on the hottest afternoon of the year: the outdoor unit hums but the fan won’t spin, or the compressor clicks and won’t start. The capacitor is the part that gives your AC motor the jolt it needs to get moving, and when it quits, the whole system just sits there. We keep a range of Rheem-spec capacitors in our New York service vehicles because this part fails often enough that waiting on a warehouse order makes no sense when it’s 94 degrees in July.
We’re an independent service provider, not affiliated with Rheem, but our technicians are trained to work on Rheem equipment along with eight other major brands. If your system is down and the capacitor is the culprit, call (934) 465-5501 and a live person answers, day or night.
Which Rheem Models This Applies To
Rheem uses round and oval run capacitors across their residential AC and heat pump lines, but the exact part depends on which condenser you have. The Rheem RA13, RA14, and RA16 air conditioner series all use dual-run capacitors, which means one can serves both the compressor and the outdoor fan motor. Older Rheem units from the early 2000s sometimes used separate capacitors for each, so a visual check matters. The capacitor’s label will show the microfarad (μF) rating and voltage, and the replacement must match both within a tight tolerance. A 45/5 μF 440V dual capacitor on a Rheem RA14 is not interchangeable with the 40/5 μF version on a smaller RA13, and guessing here causes premature failure or compressor strain.
The OEM-versus-aftermarket question comes up a lot. Rheem-branded capacitors are fine parts, but most of the capacitors Rheem uses are supplied by the same manufacturers whose parts are sold under names like AmRad, Titan HD, and Mars. We typically install Titan HD or AmRad units for Rheem systems because their build quality is every bit as good as OEM, often at a better price, and they’re more likely to be on our truck when we pull up to a New York apartment building or a house in Queens on a Saturday afternoon. The key variable is the spec on the label, not the sticker on the side.

Signs Your Rheem Capacitor Replacement Is Failing
- The outdoor unit hums but the fan doesn’t turn. The capacitor can no longer deliver the starting torque the fan motor needs. Sometimes a manual push-start gets it spinning, but that only confirms the diagnosis and buys you an hour or two.
- The compressor clicks and then goes quiet. The compressor tries to start, can’t pull enough current through a weak capacitor, and trips its overload protection. Repeated cycling like this shortens compressor life measurably.
- The system runs for a few minutes and shuts off. A capacitor that works when cool and fails when hot will behave this way as the outdoor unit bakes in New York’s summer heat. The pattern gets worse until it won’t start at all.
- You see a bulge or leaking fluid at the top of the capacitor. Capacitors are sealed cylinders. A domed top, a split seam, or oily residue around the terminals is visual proof the internal dielectric has broken down. It’s done.
- The AC runs but the airflow from your vents is weak. This happens when the fan-side half of a dual capacitor degrades enough to slow the fan below its design RPM. The compressor keeps working, but the coil can’t shed heat properly, and efficiency drops fast.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
In New York, a Rheem capacitor replacement typically runs $175 to $365 installed. The part itself is inexpensive: a quality dual-run capacitor for a Rheem system costs between $25 and $70 at wholesale, depending on whether it’s a common 45/5 μF or a less common spec. The rest of the price is labor, diagnosis, and the fact that you’re paying a licensed, background-checked technician to show up fast, find the right part, and install it correctly.
Every capacitor replacement we do in New York includes a written price handed to you before any work starts, a clean work area when we leave, and our 365-Day Done Right Promise in writing. If the capacitor fails inside a year, we return and correct the work at no charge. That’s the Kingswell Way, and it’s on paper, not a handshake.

Capacitors store electrical charge even after the power is off, and they can deliver a genuinely dangerous shock if not discharged properly. A capacitor that’s still holding a charge can stop your heart. We don’t recommend handling this part yourself unless you have formal electrical training and the right equipment. What you can safely do is check your thermostat settings, inspect the breaker, and visually check the outside unit for a bulged or leaking capacitor cylinder with the power off, from a distance, without touching anything. Beyond that, the smart call is a professional.
If your Rheem is down and you suspect the capacitor, call (934) 465-5501. We’ll have a technician out to your New York home with the right capacitor on the truck, a written price in hand, and the job done the same day in most cases.
FAQs
Most Rheem capacitors last 5 to 10 years, but New York’s summer heat and winter cold stress the dielectric material inside and can cut that to 3 or 4 years on systems that cycle heavily. If you get past 10 years on the original capacitor, you’ve done well. Call (934) 465-5501 to have yours tested if it’s been a while.
No, a capacitor cannot be repaired. Once the internal dielectric has degraded, bulged, or leaked, it’s a sealed unit with no serviceable parts inside. Replacement is the only option, and it’s one of the least expensive repairs on a Rheem system. We’ll give you the written price before any work starts.
Most Rheem capacitor replacements take 30 to 60 minutes from the time our technician starts the job. That includes testing the new capacitor, checking the motor windings for damage, and verifying the system starts and runs correctly before we leave.
Yes, we stock the most common Rheem capacitor specifications on our New York service trucks, including the 45/5, 40/5, and 35/5 μF dual-run units that cover most Rheem RA13, RA14, and RA16 residential systems. If a less common spec is needed, we can usually have it the same day from a local New York supply house.
