We stock and install Rheem-compatible heat pump service parts across New York, with most repairs running $175 – $765 parts and labor included. Same-day service is available when we have the part on the truck, which covers the majority of Rheem heat pump failures we see. The typical call starts the same way: the outdoor unit runs but the house isn’t warm, or it’s cycling on and off every few minutes, or there’s frost building up on the coils when it shouldn’t be. Most New York homeowners discover a failing component during a cold snap, and by then the heat pump has been working harder than it should for weeks. Victor Mancini and our crew have been responding to Rheem heat pump calls across the boroughs long enough to know exactly which parts fail first and which ones are worth fixing versus replacing.
Which Rheem Models This Applies To
We service Rheem’s full residential heat pump line, including the RP14, RP15, RP16, RP17, and the variable-speed RP20 series, along with older RPNE and RPNL units still running in prewar homes and mid-century apartment buildings across New York. The most important thing to know before ordering any part is your unit’s full model number, which is printed on the outdoor cabinet’s data plate. Rheem model numbers encode the refrigerant type, capacity, and revision, and a part that fits an RP16 may not fit an RP14 even when both are three-ton units. We match components by that full number, never by rough size.
Rheem factory parts are well made, but for certain components like capacitors, contactors, and defrost sensors, quality aftermarket equivalents from suppliers like Mars, Supco, or DiversiTech work just as reliably and cost 20 – 40% less. We’ll always quote the OEM Rheem part first and tell you when an equivalent makes more sense for your budget. Cold Harbour Heating and Air New York is an independent service provider and not affiliated with Rheem, but we work on Rheem equipment every week and keep the most common failure parts on the truck.

Signs Your Rheem Heat Pump Service Is Failing
- Outdoor unit won’t start at all. This usually points to a failed capacitor or contactor, both of which sit in the outdoor electrical compartment. The capacitor gives the compressor and fan motor the starting jolt they need, and when it dies, the whole unit just hums or stays silent.
- Compressor runs but the fan doesn’t. A dead condenser fan motor or its capacitor means the compressor is generating heat with no way to reject it, and the system will trip its high-pressure safety switch within minutes. Running it this way can do real damage to the compressor.
- House won’t reach setpoint, or backup heat kicks in constantly. If your Rheem heat pump is running but not producing enough warm air, the reversing valve may be stuck, the refrigerant charge may be low, or the compressor itself is losing capacity. In New York winters, this often shows up as the thermostat switching to auxiliary electric heat, which runs your bill up fast.
- Frost or solid ice on the outdoor coil. Some frost is normal in cold weather. Ice that doesn’t clear after a defrost cycle points to a failed defrost sensor, defrost control board, or a bad reversing valve. In a New York winter, a heat pump that can’t defrost will eventually stop heating altogether.
- Unit short-cycles: starts, runs for a minute or two, shuts off. This is often a failing run capacitor, a clogged metering device, or a low-pressure cutoff. Short cycling is hard on the compressor and one of the most common reasons a five-year-old Rheem compressor fails early.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
Most Rheem heat pump service calls in New York land between $175 and $765, with the spread driven almost entirely by which part failed. To give you a realistic picture of what our customers actually pay:
- Capacitor replacement: $175 – $280, parts and labor
- Contactor replacement: $175 – $260, parts and labor
- Defrost sensor or thermostat: $220 – $360, parts and labor
- Condenser fan motor: $390 – $620, parts and labor
- Reversing valve replacement: $650 – $765, parts and labor, including refrigerant evacuation and recharge
A reversing valve replacement is the big one, because it requires recovering the refrigerant, brazing in the new valve, pulling a vacuum, and recharging the system to factory spec. A capacitor, by contrast, is a 30-minute job with a part that costs under $50. We hand you a written price before any work begins, and every repair we do is covered by the 365-Day Done Right Promise. If the repair fails within a year, we come back and fix it at no charge. That guarantee is on paper before our technician leaves your home.
DIY or Call Us?
There are a couple of things you can safely check before you call. Make sure the thermostat is set to heat, the filter isn’t clogged, and the outdoor unit isn’t buried in leaves or ice. A tripped breaker can be reset once. If it trips again, stop resetting it, because something is drawing too much current.
What you should not do is open the outdoor unit’s electrical compartment and start testing capacitors or wiring. A failed capacitor can still hold a charge strong enough to hurt you, and a heat pump’s compressor and fan circuits run on high voltage even when the unit is off. This is the one place where a YouTube tutorial can put a New York homeowner in the emergency room. If your Rheem heat pump isn’t heating and the simple checks didn’t solve it, call us at (934) 465-5501. We’ll diagnose the exact part, show you the price before we touch anything, and in most cases have the unit running the same day.
FAQs
A well-maintained Rheem compressor typically lasts 12 – 15 years in New York, but coastal air, long cooling seasons, and hard winter runs can knock several years off that number. If your unit is over 10 years old and the compressor has failed, we’ll give you a straight repair-versus-replace comparison before you spend anything. Call (934) 465-5501 and we’ll walk through it with you.
For most heat pump components, replacement is the repair. You can’t rebuild a failed capacitor or a seized condenser fan motor. The practical question is whether the part can be swapped without cascading issues, and we’ll tell you honestly if we think the replacement is a short-term fix for a unit that’s nearing the end of its life. Call us and we’ll tell you what we’d do in our own home.
A straightforward part swap like a capacitor or contactor takes 30 – 60 minutes on site. A reversing valve or fan motor replacement typically runs two to three hours because of the refrigerant work and system testing involved. We give you a firm arrival window when you book, and we show up in it.
Yes. We carry the most common Rheem failure parts, capacitors, contactors, defrost sensors, and fan motors, on our trucks for same-day service. For less common parts like a specific control board, most suppliers in the New York metro area can get us what we need within 24 – 48 hours. We also keep parts for Carrier, Trane, and Lennox systems in our stock, so if you have a mixed-brand setup we’re still your call.
